What is Gapfill?
Gapfill is a question type in Moodle that allows you to create fill-in-the-blank style questions. It's great for testing knowledge, vocabulary, or comprehension.
How to Add a Gapfill Question in Moodle
- Log in to Moodle and go to your course.
- Click on “Question bank” from the course menu or navigate to “Edit quiz” and then “Add a new question.”
- Choose Gapfill from the list of question types and click “Add.”
Creating the Question
- In the Question name field: give your question a short title (only visible to you).
- In the Question text area: write your sentence and wrap the missing word(s) in square brackets.
Example:
The four common types of biological organisms that affect cooling water systems are [algae|bacteria|fungi|shellfish], [algae|bacteria|fungi|shellfish], [algae|bacteria|fungi|shellfish], and [algae|bacteria|fungi|shellfish].
Case Sensitivity & Feedback Options: You can choose whether answers are case-sensitive and if hints or feedback are given.
Hiding the Answers
- Inside the Quiz, navigate to “Settings” and then click the dropdown for “Review Options.”
- In this list, you can customize when the answer is revealed. We recommend unchecking the “Right Answer” option under “Immediately after the attempt.”
- In this instance, the user will only see the correct answer after submitting the quiz in its entirety.
Other Tips
- You can provide alternate correct answers using the ~ symbol.
- Example: [colour~color] allows either spelling.
- You can add distractors (extra words) in the "Extra words" field to increase difficulty in drag-and-drop mode.
